The colloquium is centred around a series of in-depth presentations by artists who have generously agreed to focus specifically on a single project they feel represents research approaches that characterize their particular practice. Through the “artist” category on right side-bar, this website accommodates entries on each of the nine invited artist-speakers. Prior to attending the Compulsive Browse sessions, colloquium participants are invited to preview the larger oeuvre of each presenting artist. By introducing these materials ahead of time, our intention is to create a space within the actual colloquium where artists may move beyond the format of an “artist talk” to, instead, focus quite specifically on the organic development of their research within a single project and its various iterations and manifestations.
By providing a collegial platform for artists to present an in-depth, reflective analysis of just one project, the colloquium hopes to privilege an open consideration of what constitutes “research” within a diversity of practices and to consider how investigative methods and reflexive methodologies are uniquely configured and articulated by artists themselves. The colloquium presentations are complemented and extended through small-group discussions, roundtable responses, discipline-based reflections, and open fora with all artist-presenters and participants actively engaged. Institutional and independent participants representing a broad range of disciplinary perspectives, research areas, and professional affiliations have been invited to attend the Compulsive Browse Colloquium as responsive audience members who each have an interest and a stake in working closely with artists to support, frame, and disseminate their work to a larger audience.
